HEY - YOU WANT TO ARGUE WHICH DOCTOR/ACTOR/ETC IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER - DO THAT ON A DOCTOR WHO FORUM AND NOT MY ART THREAD. If people can't be civil, or on topic, I'll close comments. Be good. This is an experiment. Read more about why I'm ranting here --> onegemini.deviantart.com/journ…
"Doctor Who v3, #13 - Retailer Incentive Cover", April, 2013. Digitally drawn in Manga Studio EX 4, colors in Photoshop CS2.
Just a note to newbies, this isn't fan art (though I am a fan, and it is my art). While I still haven't done Doctor Who interiors for IDW in a while, I have been doing a few covers (and I got another one after this to share soon).
I did this "Retailer Incentive" cover for September, 2013's "Doctor Who v3, #13," written by Tony Lee, with interior art by Mike Collins and *CharlieKirchoff
. Retailer Incentive (or RI) means that the comic shop (or other retailer) must order a certain number of the regular issue before they get one of these with a special cover. Retailer Incentives happen all the time, but this happens to be for a special company-wide IDW event.
Without revealing too much, the story involves the Eleventh Doctor and Clara meeting up with Calamity Jane, Oscar Wilde, and Wild Bill Hickok (sorta).
My editor, Denton Tipton, had the idea for playing cards featuring the main characters, and Aces and Eights (look it up, bub), and the Doctor as the unknown whole card. I had them thrown down on the table with Wild Bill's gun and the Sonic framing the image. Apparenly the BBC's approval department was very impressed with the cover.
It's also not in my typical coloring and linework style. The style here is the vein of DOCTOR WHO: THE INFINITE QUEST
, a Flash-animated story featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha from a few years back. The lines are slightly more angular than my usual, there are more knock-outs (holding lines that are in color instead of straight black) and gradients to make up the colors and shading. This was done for IDW's September, "IDW Gets Animated" event
. All the IDW books will have alternate animation-inspired covers that month.
I really like how this came out, and I hope others enjoy it too.
Beg your local comic shop to order lotsa copies so you can get your hands on one of these in September!
