"Marvel Masterpieces 2007 Artist Proof Cards - Ultimate Carnage vs. Ultimate Spider-man vs. Ultimate Venom" Early 2008. Pen, ink, and marker on sketch cards.
Last summer I did 150 sketch cards in the Marvel Masterpieces 2007 series from Upper Deck Entertainment. This year, I'm doing another 150 for the 2008 series.
If you're not familiar with them, the artwork is hand drawn straight onto the pre-cut cards. We, the artists, then send them back to Upper Deck, where they are inserted randomly into packs of cards (however, if you buy a box of the cards, you're guaranteed one, I believe).
These three are Artist Proof Cards, sometimes known as Return Cards. After we completed our work on MM 07, we received a certain percentage of cards in the mail with alternate backs (the regular MM 07s were blue tinted -- these artist proofs are red tinted). With only a few rules (added later) we were allowed to draw almost anything on them, and then do whatever we want with them (sell them, give them away, keep them), provided all artwork is approved by Marvel.
I only received ten. One was presold to a collector (I'll post that soon), one was sold on eBay (it was previously here, but I had to take it down due to some legal problems all around for Upper Deck -- but I'll repost soon), and then these three. Of the remaining blanks, I'm keeping one for sure -- not sure about the rest of them, however.
But, these three have been approved so I can share them with you.
A triptych, these three cards stand alone as single-character cards, but when you put them side by side like this -- violá! A full image that shows you even more.
These were for sale on eBay, but have since sold.
